Shiri is going to Israel and Turkey to be a teaching assistant on a trip for school. It is one of the international experiences. They already had to cut the India segment out of the India and China trip because of the attacks in Mumbai. Naturally, everyone is concerned about the war in Gaza. We're not so concerned about the safety of the trip as much as the safety of Israelis and the world's perspective.
There are three points I would like to address. The first is that Hamas is fighting for their own state. That is completely untrue. They fight to destroy Israel. Hamas' credo is the destruction of Israel and death to infidels. They use tactics that should have the world up in arms. The attack that killed 30 people on the UN school in Gaza happened because there were mortars fired from inside the school. Why would civilians be inside a compound that is used as part of military operation? Because they use it as a media tool; if Israel kills any civilians they perpetrate murders, they are no longer fighting a war. Hamas is killing their own people. Along with Israeli civilians. They kill in errant rocket attacks and anyone they think is a "collaborator" with Israel. Or Fatah.
What happens when you throw rocks at underserving, undefended people in the US? Or any other country? You go to jail. What would happen if Mexico fired rockets into the US? Or Japan at China? Somebody is going to get their ass kicked. That is what is happening in Gaza. The Palistinians are a pawn in the Middle East game. The Arab world does not help them and tells them the enemy is Israel. They only provide weapons; there is no chance of assistance to create viable, vibrant communities. The Palistinians need to figure out passive resistance, like Ghandi and Martin Luther King, Jr. did.
The second point we need to examine the term refugee camp. They are scattered throughout Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan and Lebanon. In Israel there are also refugee camps, although they have turned into viable places to thrive because of the efforts of the state and the people. These refugees came from all over the world to seek freedom. The city of Sderot that has been the victim of so many rocket attacks is one such place. So are all the outskirts of Tel Aviv, now a world center of culture. You can either hold onto your bad situation and dwell in your refugee camp or rise up and build yourself a vibrant city.
The third and most troubling is the claim that Israel is committing genocide. This is ludicrous. Israel will be the last country to commit genocide. Six hundred Palistinians have been killed in Gaza since the warm started and over 90% have been soldiers of Hamas. It is always a tragedy when civilians die in military operations but with Hamas it is unavoidable. Israel goes through great pains to avoid civilian casualties, spending millions on ever more accurate weapons to defend themselves.
Where were all the people screaming genocide during the Holocaust or the Balkan genocide or Rwanda and currently in Darfur, Sudan? I think it is partly because it is cool to support the underdog, which in this case is Hamas. But remember that Hamas is funded by oil. Oil is not the underdog. Oil has us all by the short curlies. Israel can hold off its enemies with its military but it can defeat them by developing alternatives to oil. Fortunately, there are many countries searching for alternatives. Israel has two advatages to succeeding; motivation and scientific ability.
After watching a documentary about an American oberserver in Sudan, The Devil Came on Horseback, I made the connection of that genocide to oil. And China. And why we never stopped it; because war in Darfur would have turned into war with China, the source of all of our junk and money. Now your cheap Chinese crap isn't so cheap, is it? There is still work to do in Darfur. Start at Save Darfur. We've heard "Never Again!" a million times. We need to do something about. Something that the purpetrators of genocide should know is that there are always survivors. The proof is in the pictures of the previous post.
